The International Management Action Award (IMAA) is an international award to recognise outstanding individuals who have demonstrated exceptional ability in taking management action to achieve sustainable, tangible results for an organisation, society or nation.
The award, first announced in September 1999, aims to create and nurture a pool of individuals with effective managerial skills to drive their organisations in the knowledge-based economy and serve as role models for others to emulate. To date, 23 outstanding individuals have received the award. Best management practices will be disseminated through the sharing of experiences by award recipients.
Besides the business sector, the award is open to individuals in the public sector, arts, social services and other areas. IMAA recipients are given a plaque, which symbolises recognition for outstanding achievements in management action.
The IMAA is different from other awards. Notably, it emphasises innovative management action, that is, the ability to achieve results and the potential of the individual to succeed, creating impact and value for an organisation, society or the nation. Success is not measured by absence of setbacks but by the ability to contribute to sustainable and continual management action.
Recipients will receive an award that symbolises recognition of outstanding achievements in management action. They will have the honour of joining the IMAA alumni and be a part of the resource panel for sharing their management experience and expertise. Recipients can use the IMAA logo on their name cards and the IMAA initials after their name.
Best management practices will be disseminated through experience-sharing by the award recipients. An international pool of management talents will be linked through the IMAA Alumni. This aims to promote and reinforce the importance of management and strengthen management capabilities in organisations.
The Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Singapore administers the IMAA, with the Singapore Productivity Association as its Secretariat. SPRING Singapore is a Supporter of the Award.
An Awards Council approves the award recipients. Members of the Awards Council comprise the British High Commissioner to Singapore, captains of industry, academics and representatives from CMI and SPRING.
The council is supported by a steering committee, which draws up policies and guidelines for the Award programme and recommends the recipients of the award. The Awards Council and steering committee are supported by a panel of assessors which evaluates the shortlisted nominations, conducts interviews and shortlists nominees.
The theme for the 7th IMAA will be “Compassion in Crisis - Caring for Staff and Society in Turbulent times”.
Selection of IMAA recipients is a rigorous process, and uses the following Award Criteria.
Compassion in Crisis – Caring for Staff and Society in Turbulent Times
Transformation and change are key watchwords for the manager of today, who typically exercises personal leadership under benign economic conditions. The last 18 months, however, have been anything but “settled”, so this 7th IMAA Award focuses on the challenges a manager has faced, and the personal impact and achievements he or she has made during troubled times.
This is exemplified by management action at an individual level, the ability to demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities, skills in managing people, processes & information – all in a tough business climate. Moreover, in a post-Copenhagen world coming to terms with the notion of “scarcity”, the Award also looks at how the leader has handled challenges in a compassionate and sustainable manner.
Through strong people management skills, the award focuses on individuals who have been able to engage and challenge others in demonstrable ways, to unleash their creativity & collective intelligence, and contribute to their organisational success & competitiveness. This will not have been easy.
Results will have been achieved with a strong eye on the present, through innovative management approaches, and by overcoming challenges and adversity in transformational ways. Results will also have been achieved with an eye to the future, to more effectively conserve and manage their finite resources in sustainable ways, in terms of physical, as well as Human Capital.
The Award focuses on how an individual has risen to the occasion in the recent turbulent times. It looks at how they have addressed specific issues, and seized opportunities to make a difference for today, and, for tomorrow.
It also assesses how these individuals overcame their difficulties, remained motivated to drive change, achieve improved performance, and embrace continuous learning in their leadership style. In doing so, the decisions they took and actions they initiated, will signpost the true impact that they as leaders made.
The Award seeks to understand how the organisation’s vision guides the individual in understanding self, achieving results and scaling greater heights. How personal values underpin the individual’s actions and are aligned to those of the organisation is also assessed.
The Award understands that managers play a meaningful role in the creation of a vibrant society. Contribution to the community and the environment, beyond the individual’s core responsibilities are demonstrated, including appointments in professional or civic organisations form part of the Criteria.
Finally, the Award does not limit itself to the past and present, but also looks strongly to the future. Therefore, the individual’s personal “Runway for Growth” is assessed against the backdrop of performance and further growth.
Individuals who have demonstrated exceptional ability in taking management action to achieve sustainable, tangible results for an organisation and society are eligible for the award.
The award is open to outstanding individuals from all sectors (including the public, arts and social services) who are:
